Gallery Quires at Beaminster or Return of the Wold Church Band

An afternoon concert of village church music, anthems and dance tunes from two centuries ago is set to raise the roof of Beaminster’s fine medieval church.
Beaminster Gallery Quire will be joined by their friends from Devon, the Crediton West Gallery Quire, at 3pm on Saturday 28 October. Together they will sing and play the wonderful tunes gathered from Dorset and Devon manuscripts, along with seasonal readings. The afternoon will also feature a special appearance by ‘The Bickleigh Serpent’.
According to Hine’s History of Beaminster, St Mary’s Church used to have a singing gallery at the west end, housing ‘a large mixed choir and an orchestra of six instruments’. But around 1860 they were replaced by an organ, much to the chagrin of ‘the wold church band’!
Well the ‘wold church band’ is back again, this time to raise much needed funds for the upkeep of the church.

Tickets are £8 including interval refreshments, and are available from the Church Office (01308 862320), the Yarn Barton Centre (01308 863047), from Ron Emett (01308 868025) or at the door.
