Friends (Contact Theresa Colton on 01308 862711)
Hooke Friends is held on the first Tuesday of every month from 1030 am - 12.00 am, and is an informal gathering of whoever wants to turn up for a coffee and a chat,. Members of the village and the wider community, of all ages, welcome the opportunity to meet and catch up on news, share each others company, greet new arrivals, dote over newborn babies, view the latest litter of puppies, and generally enjoy the reality of village life. We meet in different homes throughout the village, by invitation. Transport can always be arranged if required, just telephone Theresa. For details of the next meeting see the Hooke entry in Teams News.
THADS is a thriving local amateur dramatics group that combines the impressive acting and singing talent of Hooke with our neighbouring village of Toller Porcorum. Every year they put on a Pantomime performance at Toller Village Hall, which is renowned for its humour and professional presentation. Other events are held throughout the year. Volunteers are always welcome, either to act or to carry out the multitude of equally vital "behind the scenes" tasks that go to putting on a good performance. Speak to Roger for more information, he will be delighted to talk with you.
The village of Hooke boasts one of the smallest democratically elected local bodies in the County of Dorset. Too small to warrant a Parish Council, we hold a Parish Meeting approximately four times a year, when matters of village concern or importance are discussed and a consensus established. The village votes annually on the size of Precept that will be raised to fund the activities and administration of the Parish Meeting, and this agreed sum is raised through the Community Charge. Needless to say, Hooke has one of the lowest charges in Dorset as a result! The Chairman, Clerk and other officers are elected at an Annual General Meeting, at which accounts are also presented. There is a small Planning Sub-Committee which meets on an occasional basis to consider and respond to notices of planning applications within the village area as and when they arise. Members of this sub-committee are elected at the AGM. They always hold open meetings and any villager can attend and present their views on an application as they so wish. The considered opinion of the sub-committee is then forwarded to West Dorset District Council (WDDC) Planning in time to be taken into account at the Local Area Planning Meeting. Individual members of the village are still able to present their own opinions to WDDC in the normal way, by letter or on the planning website. |
