For an up to date
forecast of monthly services, please refer to the published list of
Team services which you can find by returning to the Home page and clicking
on the Services button.
There is generally
a service held in St Giles, Hooke most Sundays (except the fifth Sunday
of any month, which tends to be a Team service at a selected parish
around the Team area).
Holy Communion
BCP (normally held at 11 am)
Generally, on the first Sunday of the month we celebrate Holy Communion
using the order of service taken from the 1662 Book of Common Prayer
(BCP). Unusually, it is our tradition in Hooke during this service to
sing the major elements of the service, sometimes unaccompanied, to
the setting by Marbecke. In so doing we believe that we are one of the
only congregations within the Salisbury Diocese to keep this musical
tradition alive and relevant.
Interestingly, the service generally attracts our largest congregations,
drawing visitors from other parishes who treasure the beautiful language
and familiar rhythm of the service. By maintaining this tradition we
believe that we are in closer communion with the countless generations
who have gone before us and who have worshipped in Hooke Church.
Family Service
(normally held at 11 am)
Whenever possible we try to hold at least one service every month specifically
for the family. Sometimes this is a Family Eucharist. The order of service
and choice of hymns is designed to engage the younger members of the
congregation, who are often involved in the running of the service,
leading our prayers, reading the lesson, taking of the collection etc.
We also hear from the Sunday School, who sometimes arrange to perform
a playlet or song to illustrate what they have been learning.
Eucharist
CW (normally held 11 am)
Whenever possible, we hold a Eucharist service using the order of service
taken from the 2000 Book of Common Worship. This service is more familiar
now to many of the congregation, and is sung accompanied by the organ.
A wide selection of hymns is chosen from Hymns Old and New, and Hooke
prides itself on the volume - if not the quality! - of its singing.
Evening Service
(held at 6.30 pm)
Our evening service provides an opportunity to introduce some variety
into our monthly pattern of services. One month we may hold a Songs
of Praise service, another month may be a traditional Evensong, or alternatively
a service designed and largely run by the older children. We try over
the course of the year to accommodate a range of preferences, to ensure
that worship in St Giles remains relevant to as many in our community
as possible.
In Easter Week we generally hold Compline on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday,
with a service of Devotion on Good Friday morning.
At Christmas, we
generally have a 'Blessing of the Crib' service early on Christmas Eve,
where many children take part in a Nativity scene . This, for many,
is the real beginning of celebrating Christmas.
We also hold special
Services throughout the year for celebrating Mothering Sunday, Harvest,
Weddings and Marriage Blessings.
