St
Mary - South Perrott - History
|
|||||||||||||||||||||||
|
The
parish church of South Perrott now serves as the church for the adjoining
parish of Chedington following the closure of the latter's church in the
1980's.
St Mary, South Perrott, is of cruciform design and from surviving architecture probably dates from the late 12th century visible in the pillars of the crossing supporting the tower. The site is a prominent position on a flat terrace above the river Parrett and was probably chosen in Saxon times when in a pre-conquest period the manor was owned by a Bishop of Sherborne. |

In the latter quarter of the 15th century substantial work was undertaken on the church involving increasing the height of the transept and nave walls, replacing the arches of the crossing, inserting larger windows of 3 cinquefoil lights in the nave and transepts, building a stair turret for access to the tower and adding another stage on the tower. The view of the church shown above from the north-west has remained unaltered for over 500 years; similarly that from the south, with the exception of a vestry built in the south-east corner on the site of a former 16th century chapel. South Perrott is one of the few medieval churches in the district not to have been the subject of any drastic restoration particularly in the Victorian era. Around 1828, due to subsidence of the structure of the tower, towards the south-east, remedial work was done to repair the arches of the crossing and a buttress added to prevent further movement. |

In
the period 1907-1910, when the vestry was built and a new east window
inserted, the interior furnishings of the church were completely replaced
all to designs by A Southcombe Parker of Plymouth who in 1913 also designed
the organ case. The window in the south transept was donated in memory
of Rev. Stroud, rector of the parish from 1873-1904.
